excerpts from "1984" discussing the conspiracy:

"...The conspiracy - the organization - is it real? It is not simply an invention of the Thought Police?" asked Winston.

"No, it is real. The Brotherhood, we call it. You will never learn much more about The Brotherhood than that it exists." said O'Brien. "Emmanuel Goldstein is our leader."

"I will lend you a copy of Goldstein's book...from which you will learn the true strategy by which we shall destroy the society we live in. Full members of the Brotherhood have read the book. There are not many in existence, as you can imagine. The book is undestructible. If the last copy were gone, we could reproduce it almost word for word. You will return it in fourteen days."

Even O'Brien, Winston noticed, seemed to pronounce the words as though they were in italics. Winston had heard the whispered story of a terrible book, a compendium of all the heresies, of which Goldstein was the author and which circulated clandestinely here and there. It was a book without title. People referred to it, if at all, simply as the book. But one knew of such things only through vague rumours. Neither the Brotherhood nor the book was a subject that any ordinary Party member would mention if there was a way of avoiding it.

The book, a heavy black volume, was amateurishly bound, with no name or title on the cover. The print also looked slightly irregular. The pages were worn at the edges, and fell apart, easily, as though the book had passed through many hands. The inscription on the title page ran:

When one is caught, he confesses. That is unavoidable. But one has very little to confess, other than one's own actions. One is not able to betray more than a handful of unimportant people. At most, when it is absolutely necessary that someone should be silenced, we are occasionally able to smuggle a razor blade into a prisoner's cell."

Even the victim of the Russian purges could carry rebellion locked up in his skull as he walked down the passage waiting for the bullet."

Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty, and then we shall fill you with ourselves."...

"What is our motive? Why should we want power?"

"The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power."
