To Orwell Today,
re: GENOCIDAL SAINT FAMILLE

Madam,

Pumpernickel Films has been commissioned to make a documentary for BBC Storyville and France 2 about France's past and current policy towards the Rwandan genocide.

We are particularly interested in the cases of the génocidaires France has helped to flee and given refuge to since 1994 - most notably Father Munyeshyaka.

While researching the subject, I came across your website and read your article with great interest. You're quoting the April 1999 issue of African Rights which I have been trying to track down for a while. Is there any way you could provide me with a copy of this issue?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kindest regards,

Greetings Delphine,

Thanks for your interest in my article about visiting St Famille Church in Kigali, Rwanda.

The African Rights article I quoted from is a 7-page Press Release describing a report they published in April 1999 entitled FATHER WENCESLAS MUNYESHYAKA: IN THE EYES OF THE SURVIVORS OF SAINTE FAMILLE. It contains the testimonies of 45 survivors who accuse Father Munyeshyaka of complicity in genocide and want him extradited from France to face prosecution.

I notice, from a quick google search, that the full report is available through bookstores, ie for example two places are:

Nitro Price, UK and Borders, UK

I don't myself have the report but can send you a copy of the 7-page press release describing it (the one I quoted from in my article) if you'd like.

All the best,
Jackie Jura

PS - I actually went to GENOCIDAL SAINT FAMILLE again the following year, and this time went inside the KIGALI CHURCH & MEMORIAL. Another way to see St Famille is to watch the movie SOMETIMES IN APRIL which was filmed on-location in Rwanda and includes scenes inside and outside the real St Famille church.

PPS- In the Rwanda section of my website I have more articles about the relationship between France and Rwanda before and during the genocide, that may be of interest (the most recent at the top):
