ORWELL BIRTHDAY TYPING WIGAN
This year -- on June 25th, 2013 -- is George Orwell's 110th birthday, he being born in 1903.
It's the fifth year since I began the ritual of typing a page from one of Orwell's books on Orwell's typewriter on Orwell's birthday -- typed in descending order that he wrote them. This year's book is THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER which was published in 1937.
The typewriter's not really Orwell's -- it's mine, which I inherited from my grandfather -- but it's the same make and model as the one Orwell used to type 1984. It's a portable Remington -- "circa 1939" -- according to the white label affixed by my grandfather which is either the year it was made or the year he bought it.
Above are photos of this year's birthday party for Orwell with the finished page of typing displayed arcross the top of the typewriter and my copy of THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER to the left.
Pages from the previous years' typing are laid across the desk in front of the battered typewriter case to which I've attached a HAPPY BIRTHDAY balloon.
Orwell enjoyed the party -- as can be seen by his smiling face posing for a picture before blowing out the candles on the cake -- one for every ten years since his birth one hundred and ten years ago. ~ Jackie Jura
