UNPEACE DAY WAR OF TERROR

To Orwell Today,

I noticed an error in the essay where you say INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE "begins WORLD-WIDE WAR OF TERROR. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, was speaking in New York at the opening of the UN General Assembly. He reminded the gathering that this was the 20th anniversary of the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE, a day of world-wide peace and goodwill. "He was just about to lead a moment of silence in the name of peace when the first jet struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. "That day, 9-11, began the WORLD-WIDE WAR OF TERROR."

The International Day of Peace is September 21, not September 11.

But I was struck by the War of Terror. I know the rhetoric "war on terror", and I have thought of it as a war OF terror, but now I see much clearer that it is a war of terror designed to keep us in line.

Greetings Nick,

After receiving your email I did an internet search for INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE to see if I could find out why I thought it was September 11 and you say it is September 21, and I learned that the date varies:

"The International Day of Peace is observed each year on the opening day of the regular session of the United Nations General Assembly...the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 proclaimed the opening day of its regular session as the International Day of Peace. In its resolution, the General Assembly invited all Member States, organs and organizations of the UN system, non-governmental organizations, peoples and individuals to observe the Day in an appropriate manner..."

What is the International Day of Peace? (United Nations Cyber School Bus)

(Notice, in the description above, the use of the word "organs". This is Communist terminology that is used in the Soviet Union when referring to Party agencies. In "1984" Orwell described how BIG BROTHER (the world-wide organization that pretended to concern itself with "peace") presented itself to the world in human form, ie with the face of BIG BROTHER and the slogan BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.)

Upon searching farther on the internet I found that in 2001 the UN passed a resolution that commencing in 2002 the International Day of Peace would henceforth be on September 21:

UN International Day of Peace Resolution

So we are actually both right because since 1981, and up to and including 2001, the date for the International Day of Peace varied from year to year depending on the opening of the regular session of the UN assembly, which in 2001 was on September 11th.

Without World WAR One and World WAR Two there would never have been a need for an international organization (UN) pretending to concern itself with PEACE.

And without TERROR there would be no need for a war ON terror which, in reality (as you have noticed as well) is a war OF terror perpetrated internationally since September 11, 2001.

All the best,

To Orwell Today,

But wow... I had no idea that it was held on 9/11... isn't that oddly coincidental? I am also struck by the symbolism of "9-11", considering here in the States it is the phone line for emergencies... Anyhoo, thanks for responding.

Nick

Greetings Nick,

Yes, "oddly coincidental" is a good observation.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
