Kennedy Show to Rekindle Berliners' Fascination
by Ian Rogers, Reuters, Jun 18, 2004

BERLIN - Berliners are set to renew their love affair with former U.S. President John F. Kennedy when an exhibition showing previously unseen photographs and memorabilia opens at a small gallery in the German capital Saturday. The centerpiece of the show, which groups pictures and items from various collections put together in the 40 years since Kennedy was shot, is a well-worn black leather briefcase* he took with him everywhere, including on his final and fatal trip to Dallas in November 1963.

The beloved case, which was thought to be lost for decades but reappeared in 1998, was auctioned off that year to a private collector for $770,000 -- but has since then been languishing in a strong box. Kennedy used it to carry reading materials and refused to discard it even after the handle came off and the seams split. The Kennedy family remains a source of fascination for Europeans. America's 35th president is especially revered in Germany for his speech in Berlin in June 1963 when he reaffirmed U.S. support for a city trapped in communist eastern Europe. On a balcony outside West Berlin's city hall Kennedy said:

"All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of free Berlin.
And therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words
'Ich bin ein Berliner' (I am a Berliner)."

In the United States, Kennedy's reputation has been tarnished by allegations of infidelity** and ties to organized crime***, but in Europe and especially Germany he is cherished as the charismatic leader who stood up to the Soviet Union.

Loredana Nemes, a spokeswoman for Berlin's Camerawork Gallery, which is staging the exhibition, said the aura of tragedy that surrounds the Kennedy family helps feed people's fascination. "If they were all still alive the myth would probably not exist," she told Reuters. "That so many of the family members died in accidents or were killed over the years is a tragedy and perhaps it's human nature to feel sympathy for that suffering."

Also on display is a black pillbox hat that fashion icon Jackie Kennedy wore on the trip to Germany in 1963****. After a gust of wind blew a dent in the hat, women all over America began deliberately denting their own hats and eventually hat-makers began making them with dents included. Nemes said the aim of the show is to present a chronological journey through the life of the Kennedys. "The goal is to show a wide range of pictures and unique objects that have not yet been seen," Nemes said, adding that they plan to donate proceeds to a German AIDS charity.

* I don't know anything about JFK's briefcase but I've read that the most cherished piece of JFK memorabilia, which to this day has not been found, is JFK's Bible, which was used by LBJ to swear the Presidential oath.

**...There is not one iota of evidence that JFK was ever even ONCE unfaithful to his wife Jackie, let alone routinely unfaithful to her. The rumour of JFK's womanizing was created in the 70s by the puppet-masters. The stories were called "leaks" and many of them originated in the office of the head of the FBI - a homosexual named Hoover - who hated the Kennedys with a passion.

***...JFK was NOT a Mafia associate but was in fact the biggest enemy the Mafia had - next to his brother Bobby. When JFK was a Senator and Bobby was a lawyer in the Justice Department they investigated and prosecuted organized crime and this continued throughout JFK's presidency....JFK wasn't screwing Marilyn Monroe, he was screwing the Mafia.

THE ENEMY WITHIN and JFK POISON PEN KILLERS

**** Actually, Jackie didn't accompany President Kennedy to Germany in June 1963 mainly because she was pregnant but also because it wasn't a formal visit to Europe but just a whirlwind tour and a chance for JFK to make a detour to Ireland. Their baby, Patrick, was born the end of August but died two days after birth. It wasn't until November that Jackie was able to travel with JFK again and that was for the trip to Texas where he was killed on Friday, November 22nd, in Dallas, their third stop along the way.
