To Orwell Today,

Hello,

I'm hoping you can help me. My city has installed smart water meters and I am the only one they have yet to install. I've been resisting for a few months now and they are done messing around with me. I was sent a letter from their lawyer and was told that this meter is the only one approved for installation in my city and that if I don't call to set up an appt then my water will be shut off January 31st, 2015. My bill is paid but they say they can shut my water off anyway if I'm not going to comply. I'm dealing with the city so it's government, not a utility. I was maybe going to go to the county courthouse and see if I can talk to someone who can override them but not sure who to go to.

Can they really shut my water off? I'm so tired of thinking about this that any advice will be greatly welcome.

Thank you,
Colleen

Greetings Colleen,

Legally I don't think the government can shut off your water if you've paid your bill -- but that doesn't mean they won't do it -- they've done it elsewhere and then extort connection fees to turn it back on.

Sorry but I don't know what to suggest you do -- other than get in touch with organizations specializiing in how to refuse smart meters -- there are links in some of the articles on my website, for example: Citizens For Safe Technology.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
