KITE'S EYE VIEW OF ORWELL'S BARNHILL

To Orwell Today,
re: VISITING ORWELL'S BARNHILL

Hi Jackie,

Really enjoyed your website.

Going to spend ten glorious days at Barnhill from this weekend and will be making a little movie while I am there for uploading later.

Really looking forward to it. Got such a lot of useful information from you.

Regards,
Dom Shaw

Greetings Dom

That's great you're going to Barnhill -- I hope you'll share your experience and pictures - and little movie - with ORWELL TODAY readers.

Drink a "nice cup of tea" and a dram of Jura whisky in toast to old George while you're there - no doubt his ambience will be enveloping you.

Please say hello to the Fletchers from me, and I'm really looking forward to hearing from you soonest.

All the best,
Jackie Jura

To Orwell Today,

Hi Jackie,

I attach this photo of Barnhill and a link to a little film we made while we were there which the Fletchers have viewed and approved.

Barnhill Kite

Barnhill is the Fletcher family home at the remote northern end of the Isle of Jura where George Orwell retreated in 1947, escaping journalism, the atom bomb and Stalinist spies he thought were out to get him.

While we were staying in the house, I thought it would rouse the Crystal Spirit of Orwell if I were to try and film the Big Brother house from a mini spy camera suspended from above.

It was an experiment that ended up owing more to performance art than film making but I think he would have been amused.

Greetings Dom,

Thanks a million for sending the photo of Barnhill and the link to the video you made.

There were a few good images from the camera in the kite -- it gave a feeling of actually being way up high in the sky looking down on the roof of Barnhill and the Sound of Jura -- in between the dizzying parts where the kite is climbing and diving and everything is topsy-turvy.

The other parts of the video -- taken from a hand-held camera, not from the kite -- were great. I loved the distant and close-up shots of Barnhill. It brought back strong memories of being there in 2004 -- seven years ago now.

I'd never noticed before that the front porch is like a happy face with a hat -- a tall thin Orwell looking out.

The photo of the red kite flying high above Barnhill is beautiful -- I think you caught the Crystal Spirit of Orwell there.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
