To Orwell Today,

Dear Mrs.Jura,

I am currently a senior in high school and working on a research paper about 1984. First of all, I love your site. It contains so much information that is well researched and educational. But i need a little help.

I am trying to prove that parts of 1984 are coming true in today's society. I have already established that our lanuage is changing much like newspeak in 1984 with politically correct words and the such. But i would really appreciate it if you could give me some other ways that our society is changing that conforms to some of the extreme ways of 1984. Maybe something about how our government is changing. Also in 1984 the family was very different, maybe you have some information on that. If you have info on other websites, books, newspaper or magazine articles that contain information on this type of thing that would be great too. Any info would be great. I would really appreciate your help if its not any trouble.

Thanks for your help,
Justin Robinett, South Carolina

Greetings Justin,

On the homepage of my website - Orwell Today - there is a heading entitled "Today's Orwell" under which you will see news headlines with links to newspapers, magazines, essays etc containing stories that I consider "Orwellian".

Under each of those headlines there's a link to one or more of the 45 Orwellian themes listed on the left-hand side of the homepage. Those are the excerpts from "1984" that are comparable to the story referred to.

The bottom line is you have to read "1984" first (or read the 45 themes into which I've divided the book) and then following the model of how I do the Orwellian comparisons, you'll be able to recognize them yourself.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
