To Orwell Today,

Hi Jackie,

Now our General Election is over you can imagine how I feel as a fervent anti-EU activist. The big three parties scarcely mentioned the most important issue in this charade of a democratic election, how the UK is being sucked dry by an organisation famous for corruption and misuse of public funds. It makes Bush's New World Order look like Disney World!

I have just re-read Frank Herbert's "Children of Dune" and found this extract which sounds familiar but still frightening-:

"A large populace held in check by a small but powerful force is quite a common situation in our universe. And we know the major conditions wherein this large populace may turn upon its keepers –

One: When they find a leader. This is the most volatile threat to the powerful; they must retain control of leaders.

Two: When the populace recognises its chains. Keep the populace blind and unquestioning.

Three: When the populace perceives a hope of escape from bondage. They must never even believe that escape is possible!"

My hope is that the UK will leave the EU – but so many people say to me that it's too late, that withdrawal is impossible. Big brother is still alive and working in Brussels and if we don't wake up here we will be saying farewell to England as a separate country!

Thanks for the Herbert quote. It's a good encapsulation of their tactics on Dune, similiar to the tactics of Big Brother's Brotherhood here on Earth.
