To Orwell Today,

Dear Jackie

First I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for putting some work and thought into analyzing the great novel that 1984 is. Truly it is a prophetic and chilling tale and we seem to live in a world all too similar to that of Orwell's.

My only question is concerning duckspeak. A good friend of mine mentioned a political cartoon that seemed to refer in some way to this term. More than likely it was concerning Bush and our current corporate communist state but I do remember Orwell mentioning it and I came across a short excerpt on your website. Perhaps I am not even sure what I am asking but I think if you could make any connections with events within the last month that would have a good strong connection to this term (duckspeak) then maybe that would be the answer I am looking for. If you are unsuccessful or my information and question are too broad or vague please reply on this and perhaps I can research my curiosity further.

In closing I would again like to mention my gratitude to you for providing a wealth of information on Orwell's revelations as well as current events in view of them. Though I have just recently discovered (today actually) I am sure I will be combing the thing in its entirety and will have many questions. I hope that you will have time to answer my question/s.

Last night Bush Junior made a televised speech extolling the virtues of the USA helping the United Nations bring peace and freedom to Iraq by continuing the war there.

Substitute Bush into the following excerpt from 1984 and you'll have the example of "duckspeak" you're looking for:

"The man [Bush] with the strident voice was still talking remorselessly away. He held some important post [president] in the FICTION DEPARTMENT [USA Government]. It was just a noise, a quack-quack quacking. Every word of it was pure orthodoxy [politically correct], pure Ingsoc [Corporate Communism]. This was not a real human being but some kind of dummy [ain't that the truth!]. It was not the man's brain [doesn't have one] that was speaking, it was his larynx. The stuff that was coming out of him consisted of words, but it was not speech in the true sense: it was noise uttered in unconsciousness, like the quacking of a duck."

To make duckspeak examples of your own use the above excerpt and substitute Blair, Putin or any other dummy [puppet] of your choice. They don't have to be politicians. So-called "experts" pontificating on the latest threat, be it Mad Cow, West Nile, Ozone Depletion or whatever are other examples of duckspeakers. And of course the talking-heads who announce the news are also duckspeakers.
