The Prince said the Chinese leadership were "a bunch of waxworks"
and regarded the ceremony as "an awful Soviet-style display"
with goose-stepping soldiers and "the ultimate horror"
an artificial breeze, created to make the flags flutter.
CHARLES' CHINA TAKE-AWAY TALK
"We had to watch the Chinese soldiers goosestep onto the stage
and haul down the Union Jack
and raise the Chinese flag."
Things are pretty bad for the Western World when the future king of its figurative head, England, doesn't have the guts or the power to publicly say what he truly thinks about the handing over of one of his nation's colonies to a Communist nation.
Instead he only expresses his thoughts in a personal journal sent to friends and then threatens to sue the newspaper that subsequently publishes it.

But Prince Charles wasn't the only so-called leader whose lips were sealed. Like the proverbial three monkeys no person of stature anywhere in the Western World criticized the Hong Kong handover.
"hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil"
Nor did the mainstream media utter a bleat of criticism, although that's to be expected. Orwell once called the BRITISH PRESS CIRCUS DOGS.
But lesser beings than princes DO have disparaging comments to publicly make about handovers such as Hong Kong and the Panama Canal. I wrote a letter-to-the-editor back in 1999 (before I had a website) expressing alarm. See CHINA AND US
Realistically, it's probably appropriate that Hong Kong be in the domain of mainland China as it is obviously geographically connected and the Western World would have a tough time defending it should the Communists have ever wanted to take it. That's what was so crazy about the Western World spending the billions of dollars fixing it up to Western standards only to subsequently hand it to the enemy.
But what's the excuse for why the USA GAVE CHINA PANAMA CANAL? That is something that EVERY leader should have SHOUTED about, including the Queen of England. But there was nary a word, even in a journal. But then again, the Queen has been seen driving through the streets of London with the leader of Communist China at her side, waving to the crowds on the side where protesters were, blocking the view of her guest, to save him from losing face. Maybe the words to the Commonwealth's anthem should be changed from "God Save the Queen" to "God Save us FROM the Queen".
England did have a King one time (Charles' great-uncle David) who wasn't afraid to speak his mind, but tragically he abdicated (forced out for marrying a divorcee) and this placed Elizabeth in line for the throne.
Princess Diana had the courage to speak out against nations, including her own, for their continued use of landmines, and Whitehall castigated her "a loose cannon" for it. ~ Jackie Jura
China most polluted on planet (wheat kernels dark-sooty-hollow-twisted) & "Humans are to blame" says UN ("nail in coffin of climate change deniers"; "Americans worst polluters on planet") & UN weather report is a "Corruption of Science" ("a political document...a hoax") & UN mandates that the science be altered ("not approved by scientists but by political delegates of the UN") & China exempt from cutting greenhouse gases (in spite of world-leading coal use) & Dark cloud of pollution over Hong Kong (from smokestacks of China mainland) & Stinky, oily, orange snow in Russia (nuclear-industrial-radioactive pollution).
