After seeing the last of Jura fade away in the distance during my PILGRIMAGE TO ORWELL I finally went inside the ferry to look for my husband and find a place to sit and contemplate. But he was nowhere to be seen and so I went and found myself a seat in the lower deck area. I was thinking that I would likely never be traveling this way again and was attempting to savour the moment by imagining what Orwell must have felt like as he sat on the ferry leaving Jura for the last time, fifty-five years ago. He had just finished writing "1984" and was deathly ill and on his way to a tuberculosis sanatorium near London.
But eventually my curiosity about the present snapped me out of thoughts about the past and I started to read the Sunday Times newspaper I'd purchased moments ago (Scotland edition). When I'm at home in Canada I often read the on-line version of the Times and it was a nice experience to be reading it in paper form. Orwell's alter ego, Winston Smith, wrote for the Times which added another dimension to my reading it here in Orwell land.
I wasn't very far into the paper - page 26 in World News - when I came across an article about how Russia has the technology to manipulate weather. During the Cold War they were working on ways to send torential rains to America to destroy our wheat crop. I ripped out the article and when I got home filed it in my bulging "weather" folder. See USSR USING WEAPONIZED WEATHER.
Now today [Sep 2005] there's a story in the world press about NASA handing control of the International Space Station to Moscow "to keep it safe" from the latest hurricane to hit America. Coincidently the space centre at risk in Texas is named after ex-President Johnson who said at one time (when he was a Senator pushing for NASA financing):
"From outer space comes the power to control the earth's weather, to cause drought and flood, to change the tides and raise the levels of the sea, to divert the Gulf Stream and change temperate climates to frigid."
It is Orwellian doublethink that America is suffering a series of chaotic hurricanes and looking to the USSR to "keep us safe" when in fact the USSR could be the very one who created the hurricanes. And you couldn't get much more 'collaboration with the enemy' than the USA handing the USSR the Space Station. ~ Jackie Jura
Space Station Control Handed To Moscow
NASA battens down Mission Control
Associated Press, Sep 23, 2005
Space isn't the main concern at Johnson Space Center Friday. Wind and water are. The computers at the home of NASA's Mission Control are powered down because Hurricane Rita is nearing. The center that houses the astronaut training base sits in a flood-prone area on the east edge of Houston. A space center spokesman says the important things, like shuttle simulators and Mission Control, are in secure, windowless rooms. Those buildings are designed to withstand winds well over 100 miles an hour. Moon rocks* and meteorites are also well protected. NASA has had hurricane problems recently. Three of them last summer caused extensive damage at Florida's Kennedy Space Center, and Hurricane Katrina damaged facilities associated with making and testing the space shuttles' external fuel tanks and main engines. Monitoring of the international space station has been turned over to controllers outside Moscow.
