To Orwell Today,

I thought the ENGLISH PEN event below might be of some interest to your members:

Hot Air: A Balloon Debate

"Four authors are in a balloon which is losing height. In order to keep the balloon aloft one by one they have to be thrown out, until only one author remains. Howard Jacobson (arguing for DH Lawrence), Kate Mosse (arguing for Agatha Christie), John O’Farrell (arguing for George Orwell) and Louisa Young (tbc) each have five minutes to put the case for their literary hero or heroine, and persuade us that they should stay in the balloon before the debate is opened up to the audience. Come along and join in the free and frank exchange of views before deciding who deserves to stay. Chairing the debate is Deborah Moggach, author of These Foolish Things."

Venue: Guardian Newsroom, 60 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3GA
Tuesday, January 15, 7pm

If you could circulate then I would be very grateful. We’re trying to get as knowledgeable an audience as possible.

Greetings Sarah,

I'm sorry to have not responded to your email until now when the Balloon Debate is already over. However, I'm sure "Orwell Today" readers will be interested in learning whether or not Orwell was thrown overboard and will check out the "English Pen" website for follow-up coverage of the event.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
