To Orwell Today,

Hi Jackie,

Just a note to thank you for your great book list. I thought that I had to have most of the JFK and family books but learned otherwise.

I wonder if any President has been written about so much?

Greetings Susan,

Thanks for letting me know you liked the JFK book list and that you too are an avid reader of good books about the Kennedy family. You therefore know the truth.

It's impossible to have an intelligent conversation about JFK with people who only know what they saw on TV or if they've read nothing but prolefeed from the Ministry of Truth on the subject.

I think the closest president to having so much written about him would be Lincoln - but not even he had as many I don't think (although he had a great number). I've got two overflowing bookshelves of Lincoln (one day I'll make a list), whereas for JFK I've got more.

I notice that the most recent president - Obama - supposedly made all his money (enough to buy a $2-million dollar house in Chicago etc) from the proceeds of his two "auto" biographies - ie books he allegedly wrote himself about himself before he was even anybody or had done anything.

Actually, I'm highly skeptical that the two Obama books really sold in the numbers required to bring in that kind of money (could be just a front organzation). Personally, I've never heard of anyone who's read one (let alone bought one).

All the best,
Jackie Jura

Obama tax returns reveal memoirs made millions. Reuters, Apr 15, 2009
President Barack Obama made nearly $2.5 million in 2008 from the sales of his two best-selling memoirs, according to tax information released by the White House on Wednesday. Obama jointly filed his 2008 federal income tax return with his wife Michelle, reporting an adjusted gross income of $2,656,902 and paying $855,323 in federal income tax and $77,883 in state income taxes, the White House said. Obama's books, "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream", were New York Times best-sellers and have sold hundreds of thousands of copies in the United States and around the world. Obama earned $2,479,648 from the sales of his books in 2008, according to the tax return, when as a U.S. senator from Illinois he campaigned to become the 44th president of the United States...

OBAMA PAL TRASHES CAMELOT (...When news broke that Senator Barack Obama's Chicago education co-chair, the unrepentant Weatherman terrorist, William Ayers dedicated his book, Prairie Fire — The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism, to Robert Kennedy’s assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, a collective shudder was felt. But that vile dedication grazes the tip of Ayers’ Anti-Kennedy antics. Declassified 1976 FBI files disclose how Ayers, and his wife, Bernadine Dohrn, subverted President John F. Kennedy’s U.S. embargos against Cuba. Senator Ted Kennedy designated Obama his brother’s rightful political heir, JFK’s daughter, Caroline, avowed Obama would be a President like her father. Their dynastical endorsement and legacy passing to Obama over Hillary Clinton effectively anointed the candidate from Illinois, shrouded by radical associations, as the head of the new Democrat party...)

Washington insider who made Obama rich, Financial Times, Oct 24, 2008 (...Barack Obama, the son of an absent African father and a mother who relied on government-issued food stamps to feed her children, became a millionaire in a more modern manner – on the back of a book deal. It happened circuitously. In 1990, Obama was already enough of a celebrity – the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review – for the New York publishers Simon & Schuster to offer a "six-figure contract" for a proposed autobiography. The only problem was that Obama was too busy finishing law school to write the book, and the contract was eventually cancelled. By the time Obama finished "Dreams From My Father" – published by Times Books in 1995 – his advance was only $40,000. In 2004, Obama – now a state senator in Illinois and a candidate for the US senate – was chosen to be the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention, but his book was long out of print. Yet when he arrived in Washington, the $169,300 senator’s salary was not going to be his mainstay: two weeks before he was sworn in, Crown Books announced a $1.9m three-book contract with the senator-elect....)
