To Orwell Today,
re: CONCERNED CITIZEN DRUG WAR

Hi Jackie,

With reference to your recent article on the drug problem in our cities. Isn't this what ORWELL was also on about in 1984?

Drugs are taken with the false promise of instant happiness but what they really provide is instant unhappiness through addiction, ill health, death and an industry for big business. Nothing changes. During the time of Queen Victoria when the British Empire was at its peak our colonialist forefathers were based in India where people like T.E. Lawrence's father was responsible for the storage of the opium for the masses, a drug that was shipped to China where many of the populace were addicted. It was a thriving industry and one of the main means of wealth of the Empire.

We have seen the same with Afghanistan where our troops are active and where the poppies are grown for heroin and provide a rich source of income for the drug pedlars of the world. One of the reasons put forward for the occupation was to control the poppy fields. Yeh, well it's controlled alright. BIG BROTHER has his dirty mitts in it all as per usual.

Greetings Ray,

Yes, and I often recite, "In Afghan fields, the poppies grow, beside the landmines, even though, their place is marked by 'eye in sky', but bombs, still falling, pass them by...."

And of course, in "1984" Orwell told us very explicitly that it was the brotherhood - working for Big Brother, who ran the drug trade - and all the other rackets like pornography, gambling, prostitution, crime syndicates, alcohol etc etc etc, and that "the police interfered with them very little".

Orwell said they are "a dedicated sect doing evil".

All the best,
