To Orwell Today,

hi,

i completed 1984 two days back...can you please explain to me what symbolic/hidden/outwardly/uncovered references the poems used by orwell in 1984 make/made? under the spreading....and all the other poems....!

-Rahul

Greetings Rahul,

Orwell's writings contain much of historical and contemporary English culture - including its nursery rhymes and poems etc. He also includes some of his own poems in his novels. They don't have any other deep symbolic meaning, at least I haven't tried to find any. They are used as a means of bringing reality to his characters and to help paint the vivid picture of life in Oceania in "1984".

All the best,
Jackie Jura
