To Orwell Today,

Dear Ms. Jura,

An extraordinary website. Thank you for your excellent, illuminating work on the most influential book in my life.

Best,
Rob Forbes

Greetings Rob,

Thank you so much for your kind comments about "Orwell Today" and for expressing how influential a book "1984" is. It's great to hear from others that my placing it in such high esteem is warranted - although about that I have no doubts.

I observed on the bottom of your email that you are a lecturer in history at Yale, and have recently authored a book:

The Missouri Compromise and Its Aftermath, Slavery and the Meaning of America

I'm a student - in hobby - of American history and in particular the time of Abraham Lincoln, which includes the Missouri Compromise, its repeal by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Civil War.

I find it therapeutical - when the world of the present and its future gets too tough to contemplate - to delve into reading history and classic literature, to compare what they were experiencing then, to what we are experiencing today. It used to provide consolation - in comparison - but lately it provides escapism.

All the best,
Jackie Jura
