You ponder this and you ponder that
You’ve always loved to pontificate
But you’re also very quick to demur
On anything X-certificate

When you heard the news you closed your ears
You said, well, there’s more at stake
You did some drinking, did some thinking
‘Ah! I know, it was all a mistake!
Okay, so they practised torture
But you’ve got to see the wider picture’

Stalin murdered millions, just like Hitler did
His trials were only there for show
The bodies of gallant Bolsheviks were hid
But still you called him Uncle Joe
Grouchy Marxist, you love to discuss
As long as nobody makes a fuss
As long as nobody turns up who
Introduces the truth to you

You looked and listened but didn’t believe
When Kruschev finally spilled the beans
You had to think up something fast
You had to justify the means

You got together in a darkened room
You voted on what you already knew
With great skill you always found the 'line'
"It was just a phase we had to go through
Okay, so they practised torture
But you’ve got to see the wider picture"

For liquidating a vocalist
You always kept your sharpest knife
For the softer kind of socialist
